Note of Intent

MONT NOIR is a film about the childhood of a lonely and imaginative girl whose confrontation with death leads her to write. This child is Marguerite Yourcenar. But it’s us too. We are inspired by our childhood memories in the garden, by what we feel, by our feathers and by our little rituals. We drew on both ourselves and Yourcenar’s work to come up with this story.
There is a stark contrast between the sweetness of childhood and the pain of loss. We imagine a disturbing film that combines these opposing emotions.

« I climb the steep slope through tall grass that leads to the Mont-Noir terrace. It hasn’t been cut yet. Blueberries, poppies and daisies abound there. »

(Marguerite Yourcenar, Les yeux ouverts)

«I thought for a long time that I had few childhood memories; By that I mean, before the seventh year. But I was wrong: it turns out that until now I haven’t allowed them to reach me. When looking back at the last few years in Mont-Noir, at least some are gradually becoming more visible, like the objects in the room with closed shutters where we haven’t ventured for a long time.»

(Marguerite Yourcenar, Quoi? L’Eternité)

MONT NOIR
Mont Noir
In Mont-Noir, little Marguerite lives a triple mourning: her mother died giving birth, her dog must be put down, and then Barbe, her nanny, is violently dismissed. The child grows up in great solitude, animals and nature being her only companions. Under the gaze of a demanding father, steeped in ancient culture, she is however preparing to become a writer.
